For you there is no substitute for them, no replacement.

How, then, can your lovesick heart endure without them?

If the nights' vicissitudes have cruelly parted you from them,

there is no turning from them, whatever the circumstances.

They are love, whether they are far from you or near.

They are your heart's desires, whether they offer affection or turn away.

Do not plead distance as an excuse: in love, always,

nearness and far-flung separation are alike.

For longing, the wide earth is folded up, just as

pages are folded once filled with all their contents.

Proclaim your passion, defy the reproachers, and avow

your love for them: concealing love is ruin.

For whoever conceals love, if he does not die of grief,

is a target for death's blows,

like one who hides fire in his clothes, taking a risk

with it: one day it burns him and is revealed.

Can love be hidden, or denial avail, when

your weeping eyelids speak of love?

In many a love, he who goes to extremes has the rank of one

who has attained the heights; in his excess lies honor.

Alas for the parted lover! No patience sustains him,

nor does the tribe's scattered company reunite.

His despair of them deepens his passion for them,

and seldom do despair and passion meet.

His longing leaves him on a cliff's brink, and I foresee

that passion will bring the cliff down with him.

O you heedless of the heart you wounded

by your parting, and of the eye you injured,

may my lifeblood ransom you; I would not choose for you

my body as ransom, for it is wasted and sick.

May you be spared my heart's burning grief and anguish

over you, and a breast that trembles with passion.

Whom shall I blame, and who is there to pity me when

I complain of my anguish, or yearning strikes me down?

I am the one who went far from his loved ones, trusting

in his patience, and who admits his negligence.

I parted from them, and they were youth's season; there is no

replacement for youth, nor for its season.

And wherever they may be, however distant their home, theirs is

a love from me, enfolded in the heart's dark core.
