بُكاءُweeping مِثليَone like me منat وَشْكِthe imminence of النّوىseparation سَفَهُfolly
وأمرُand the matter of صَبْرِيَmy patience بَعدafter البَينparting مُشْتَبِهُuncertain
For one like me to weep at imminent parting is folly;
yet whether I can be patient after separation is uncertain.
فَماso no يُسَوِّذفُنِيkeeps me waiting (unclear form) فيconcerning قُربِهمْtheir nearness أملٌhope
ولَيسand there is not فيin اليأْسِdespair ليfor me رَوْحٌrelief ولاَnor رَفَهُease
So no hope of their nearness keeps me waiting,
and in despair I find neither relief nor ease.
أُكاتِمُI conceal from الناسَpeople أشْجَانِيmy sorrows وأحْسَبُهاand I think them
تَخْفَىare hidden فَتُعلِنُهاso reveal them الأسقامُillnesses وَالوَلَهُand anguished longing
I hide my sorrows from people and think them
hidden, but sickness and anguished longing reveal them.
كأنّنِيas though I منfrom ذُهولِthe daze of الهمِّgrief فيin سِنَةٍa doze
ونَاظِرِيand my eye قَرِحُsore الأجفانِthe eyelids مُنْتَبِهُawake
It is as though, dazed by grief, I were dozing,
while my eye, its lids sore, remains awake.
أذْنبتُI erred ثُمّthen أحلْتُI shifted الذّنْبَthe blame منout of سَفَهٍfolly
عَلَىonto النّوىseparation ولَبِئسَand truly wretched is العادَةُthe habit السّفَهُfolly
I erred, then in folly shifted the blame
onto separation—how wretched a habit folly is!
أقمتُI stayed طوعاًwillingly وسَارُواand they departed ثُمَّthen أنْدُبُهمI lament them
ألاwhy not صَحِبْتُI accompanied نَواهُمtheir departure حيثُماwherever اتّجَهُواthey headed
I stayed willingly, and they left; now I lament them:
Why did I not share their journey, wherever they went?
أضرَّhas done harm بيto me نَاظِرٌan eye تَدْمَىbleed مَحَاجِرُهُits sockets
وخَاطرٌand a mind مُذْsince نأوْاthey went far away حيرانُbewildered مُنْشَدِهُits seeker (reading uncertain)
An eye whose sockets bleed has done me harm,
and a mind whose seeker has been bewildered since they went away.
فَماso no يُلائِمُsuits ذَاthis one بعدَafter النّوىseparation فَرَحٌjoy
ولاnor يَرُوقdelights لِهذَاto this one مَنظَرٌa sight نَزِهُlovely
So after parting, no joy suits this mind,
nor does a lovely sight delight this eye.
سَقْياًmay rain be granted لِدَهرٍto an age نَعمنَاwe lived at ease فيin غَضَارَتِهits luxuriance
إذْwhen فِيin الحَوادِثِlife's vicissitudes عمّاof what سَاءَنَاgrieved us بَلَهُheedlessness
May rain bless an age in whose luxuriance we lived at ease,
when life's vicissitudes were heedless of what might grieve us;
وعَيْشُنَاand our life لَمhad not يُخَالِطْmingle with صَفوَهُits clarity كَدَرٌmurk
وودُّناand our love لمhad not تَشُبْtaint إخلاصَهُits sincerity الشُّبَهُsuspicions
and no murk had mingled with the clarity of our life,
and no suspicions had tainted our love's sincerity.
مَضَىit passed وجَاءand came زمانٌan age لاnot نُسَرُّwe are gladdened بِهِby it
كُلُّall البرِيَّةhumankind مِنهُbecause of it فيamid الّذِيwhat كَرِهُواthey loathed
It passed, and an age came that brings us no joy;
all people, because of it, live amid what they loathe.
