أُفٍّ لِلدُّنيا فما أَوبا جَناها

أُفٍّ لِلدُّنيا فما أَوبا جَناها

لَيسَ يخلو مَنْ رآها مِنْ أَذاها

لَيسَ يخلو مَنْ رآها مِنْ أَذاها

Fie upon the world—how unwholesome her fruit!

None who has seen her is free of her harm.

خَدعَتْنَا بأباطيلِ المُنى

خَدعَتْنَا بأباطيلِ المُنى

فارتكَسْنا في هَوانا لِهَواها

فارتكَسْنا في هَوانا لِهَواها

She deceived us with the falsehoods of hope,

So we sank into our desires, for love of her.

واستَمالَتْنا بِوعدٍ كاذبٍ

واستَمالَتْنا بِوعدٍ كاذبٍ

فتَمَسَّكنَا بِواهٍ مِن عُراها

فتَمَسَّكنَا بِواهٍ مِن عُراها

And she enticed us with a false promise,

So we clung to one of her frail handholds.

وعدَتْنا باللُّهى لاهِيةً

وعدَتْنا باللُّهى لاهِيةً

فاشتَغَلنا بتقاضينا لُهَاها

فاشتَغَلنا بتقاضينا لُهَاها

She idly promised us gifts,

So we busied ourselves claiming her gifts.

وهي إن جادَ بنَزْرٍ يومُها

وهي إن جادَ بنَزْرٍ يومُها

غَدُها مسترجِعٌ نَزْرَ جَداها

غَدُها مسترجِعٌ نَزْرَ جَداها

Yet if her day bestows a pittance,

Her tomorrow takes back her scant bounty.

بِئسَتِ الأُمُّ رَقوبٌ أكثَرَتْ

بِئسَتِ الأُمُّ رَقوبٌ أكثَرَتْ

وُلدَها ثمَّ رَمتْهُمُ بِقِلاها

وُلدَها ثمَّ رَمتْهُمُ بِقِلاها

What a wretched mother, bereft of children! She multiplied

Her offspring, then pelted them with her hatred.

وغداً تَنْقُلُنا منها إلى

وغداً تَنْقُلُنا منها إلى

مُظلِمُ الأرجاءِ ضَنكٍ من ثَراها

مُظلِمُ الأرجاءِ ضَنكٍ من ثَراها

And tomorrow she will carry us from herself to

A cramped, dark-cornered place in her soil.

والذي يتبعُنا من سُحتِها

والذي يتبعُنا من سُحتِها

تَبِعاتٌ مُوبقاتٌ مِنْ شَذَاهَا

تَبِعاتٌ مُوبقاتٌ مِنْ شَذَاهَا

And what follows us from her ill-gotten wealth

Are ruinous liabilities arising from her harm.

وتحوزُ المالَ بالإرثِ ومَا

وتحوزُ المالَ بالإرثِ ومَا

حازَتِ الميراثَ من أمٍّ سِواهَا

حازَتِ الميراثَ من أمٍّ سِواهَا

And she acquires wealth by inheritance; yet no

Mother besides her has ever received an inheritance.

فإِذا اللهُ رعَى والدةً

فإِذا اللهُ رعَى والدةً

ذاتَ بِرٍّ وحُنُوٍّ لا رَعاهَا

ذاتَ بِرٍّ وحُنُوٍّ لا رَعاهَا

So if God watches over a mother

Kind and tender—may He not watch over this world!

أورَدَتْنا النّارَ لا مأْوَى لنا

أورَدَتْنا النّارَ لا مأْوَى لنا

من لَظَاها ويحَ من يَصلى لَظَاهَا

من لَظَاها ويحَ من يَصلى لَظَاهَا

She led us into the Fire; we have no refuge

From its blaze—woe to whoever burns in its blaze!

أمَرَتْنا بالمَعاصي فإِذا

أمَرَتْنا بالمَعاصي فإِذا

وفَّق اللهُ امرأً منّا عَصاهَا

وفَّق اللهُ امرأً منّا عَصاهَا

She commanded us to sin; so if

God guides one of us aright, he disobeys her.

آهِ من تَفرِيطنا شُغلاً بها

آهِ من تَفرِيطنا شُغلاً بها

عن فَعال الخير والطَّاعةِ آهَا

عن فَعال الخير والطَّاعةِ آهَا

Ah, for our neglect, absorbed in her,

Instead of doing good and obeying—ah!
