Every day brings a manifest conquest and victory,

and ascendancy over enemies and their subjugation.

Time has come to you with an apology and

amends for what it did when it was naive.

The title proves true in you: you are Muʿin

al-Din, Helper of the Faith; titles are indeed omens and auguries.

You are truly the sword of Islam; may

time never blunt your two edges, O sword.

Through you Islam has grown, O its keen-edged sword,

in might, while polytheism and unbelief have been humbled.

Trust in attaining what you hope for; indeed,

God rewards His servants for what they have kept secret.

You never ceased intending jihad in secret,

then proclaimed it when open declaration became possible.

Every treasure of kings perishes; your two treasures

are the ones that endure: reward and gratitude.

Your freely available wealth belongs to generosity; you possess

only sleek steeds, white swords, and brown spears.

Your justice has embraced the people of al-Sham, but

we are far away, and Egypt is the limit of distance.

Thus, among them, we were denied the yield of what we had

sown; and Zayd and ʿAmr said:

Is it just that we, in the lands of

unbelief, are a pair, while you are alone on campaign?

    ثُمّ مالي فيمن يُجاهِدُ ذِكرُ

    My share in that was a shameful mention;

yet I am not named among those who wage jihad.

Do not forget the one who was your shade in hardship

and straitened times, now that ease has come.

Indeed, noble loyalty from a king like

you is a virtue recounted by nomads and townsfolk.

So live on, stay safe, and grow, despite your enemies,

in good fortune, as long as dawn follows night.

May time never let up in crushing your enemies,

nor may mending strengthen anyone you have broken anew.

A friend of ours is like night: he conceals the

smoke and reveals the light to the seeker of light.

He conceals my misdeeds and reveals my merits,

and guards my good name in my absence and my presence.
