لا تُنكِرَنْ مُرَّ العتاب فَتحتَه

لا تُنكِرَنْ مُرَّ العتاب فَتحتَه

شهدٌ جَنَتْه يدُ الوِدادِ النّاصِحِ

شهدٌ جَنَتْه يدُ الوِدادِ النّاصِحِ

Do not reject bitter reproach, for beneath it

Do not deny the bitterness of reproach, for it

lies honey gathered by the hand of sincere affection.

Bears witness to the hand of sincere friendship.

وتَطَلَّبَ المحبوبَ في مكروهِه

وتَطَلَّبَ المحبوبَ في مكروهِه

فالدُّرُّ يُطلَبُ في الأُجاجِ المالِح

فالدُّرُّ يُطلَبُ في الأُجاجِ المالِح

And seek the desirable within what is distasteful in it;

One seeks out the beloved despite their faults,

for pearls are sought in bitter, salty water.

As pearls are sought inside the brackish oyster's shell.

اصبِر على ما تَخْتَشي أو تَرتَجي

اصبِر على ما تَخْتَشي أو تَرتَجي

تَظْفَرْ بحُسنِ سَكينةٍ ونَجاحِ

تَظْفَرْ بحُسنِ سَكينةٍ ونَجاحِ

Be patient with what you fear or hope for;

Be patient with what you fear or hope for,

you will attain beautiful tranquility and success.

And you will succeed with tranquility and triumph.

أَوَ ما تَرى السّارين لمّا صابَروا

أَوَ ما تَرى السّارين لمّا صابَروا

ظُلمَ السُّرى أفضَوْا إلى الإصْباحِ

ظُلمَ السُّرى أفضَوْا إلى الإصْباحِ

And do you not see how the night travelers, when they patiently endured

Have you not seen that those who are patient

the darkness of night travel, reached the dawn?

Endure the dark night to reach the dawn?
