أظَنَّdid ... think? العِدَاthe foes أنَّthat ارتحالِيَmy departure ضائِريharmful to me
ضَلالاًfolly لِمَاfor what ظَنَّواthey thought وهلand does ...? يكسُدُgo unsold التَّبرُunworked gold
Did my foes think that my departure would harm me?
What folly in their thinking! Does gold ever go unsold?
وماand ... not زَادنِيgave me more بُعدِيmy distance سِوَىexcept بُعدِfar reach همّةٍambition
كماjust as زادgained نُوراًlight فيin تباعُدِهits growing distance البَدرُthe full moon
And my distance has only made my ambition reach farther,
as the full moon gains light as it moves farther away.
ولوand if كانَthere were فيin طُولِlength الثَّواءresidence فضيلةٌmerit
لماthen ... would not انتقلتْhave moved فيin أفْقِهاtheir horizon الأنجمُthe stars الزُّهْرُradiant
And were there merit in staying long,
the radiant stars would not move across their horizon.
ولوand if لَزِمتkept to أغمادَهاtheir sheaths البيضُthe gleaming swords ماnot انجَلتْwere dispelled
بهاthrough them غَمَراتُengulfing perils الحربِof war واتَّضَحَand became clear النّصرُvictory
And had the gleaming swords stayed in their sheaths, they would not have dispelled
the engulfing turmoil of war or made victory clear.
وهلْand is there ...? فيin ارتحاليmy departure عنfrom بلادٍlands تنكّرتْgrew hostile
لِمثليَfor one like me أوor للسّاكِنينَfor the inhabitants بهاin them فَخرُglory
And is there, in my departure from lands grown hostile,
any glory for one like me or for those who dwell there?
وإنّand indeed بلاداًa land ضاقgrew too narrow عنّيfor me فضاؤُهاits expanse
لأرحَبُsurely more spacious منthan أكنافِهاits reaches للعُلاfor greatness فِترُa thumb-to-forefinger span
And indeed, a land whose expanse has grown too narrow for me—
a mere span is roomier for greatness than its reaches.
وأرضاًand a land نَبَتْproved inhospitable بيto me وهيand it is آهِلَةُinhabited الرُّبىthe hills

And a land that proved inhospitable to me, though its hills are peopled,
is a wasteland—no, a wasteland is less desolate than it.
وهلand can ...? يُنكرُdeny الأعداءُthe enemies فضلِيmy merit وإنّهand indeed it

لأَسْيَرُsurely too widespread ذِكراًin renown أنfor ... to يوارِيَهُconceal it الكَفْرُdenial
And can my foes deny my merit, when it
is too widely renowned for denial to conceal?

Am I not he who has always, in maturity and youth,
had shining noble deeds and overflowing bounty,

and plunged into battles whose lightning flashes are blades,
where the downpour of those flashes is blood in torrents?

My plunging headlong into death appalls Death,
and terror haunts it because of my steadfast heart.

And had the sword-blades judged between me and them,
I would have accepted whatever the keen Indian-steel swords decreed.
ولكنْand yet تولَّىtook charge of الحاكمانِthe two arbiters قضاءَناour case

But the two arbiters took charge of our case,
so Abu Musa was for us, and Amr for them.
