وضحَhas become clear الصباحُthe dawn لناظِرِto the eye of المتأمِّلِone who reflects
فإِلامَso how long تُوضِعُwill you hasten فيalong الطريقِthe road المَجْهِلunmarked
Dawn is clear to the eye of one who reflects.
So how long will you hasten along the unmarked road?
أوَand ...? ماnot نَهتكَhas restrained you السِّنُّage عنfrom مَرَحِthe exuberance of الصِّباyouth
والخوضِand plunging فيinto غيِّthe folly of الزَّمانِthe time الأوَّلِformer
Has age not restrained you from youth's exuberance
and from plunging into the folly of former days?
نَزِّهْkeep unsullied بياضَthe whiteness of الشّيبِgray hair عنfrom دَنَسِthe stain of الهوَىdesire
فقدِfor indeed ارتدَيْتَyou have donned الدُّرَّpearls غيرnot مُفَصَّلِinterspersed with other gems
Keep the whiteness of gray hair free from desire's stain,
for you have donned pearls in an unbroken strand.
واعفِand exempt العذولَthe reprover عنfrom المَلامِreproach فلومُهfor his reproach
غيرُnot الملمِّreaching بسمعِto the hearing of منone who لمhas not يَجهلِacted foolishly
And spare the reprover the task of blame, for his reproach
does not reach the ears of one who has not acted foolishly.
نَضَاhas worn away صِبغُthe dye of الشَّبابِyouth فلستُso I do not أدريknow
لِصبغٍfrom a dye حالَthat has faded أمor تغيرِa change in حَالِcondition
Youth's dye has worn away, and I do not know
whether from faded dye or a change in my condition.
وماand not ابيضَّturned white الغرابُthe raven الجَونُblack إلاّexcept
لينْعَبَto croak بانتقالٍof moving on وارتحالِand departure
And the black raven has turned white only
to croak of moving on and departure.
إنif ضعُفَتْhas grown too weak عنto حملِcarry ثِقلِيmy weight رجْلِيmy leg
ورَابَنيand troubles me عِثارُهاits stumbling فيon السَّهلِlevel ground
If my leg has grown too weak to carry my weight,
and its stumbling on level ground troubles me,
أمشيI walk كماjust as يمشيwalks الوَجِيthe footsore one فيin الوَحْلِmud
مَشْيَthe gait of الأسيرِthe captive مُثقَلاًweighed down بالكَبْلِwith fetters
I walk as one with aching feet walks through mud,
with the gait of a captive weighed down by fetters.
فللعَصَاso the staff has عِنديَin my judgment عُذْرُthe excuse of المُبلِيone who has done his best
إنif عَجزتْit fails أوْor ضعُفتgrows too weak عنto حَمْليcarry me
So I excuse my staff as one that has done its best,
if it fails or is too weak to bear me.
