And one, troubled by my straying from

my path—though love has no path—said:

“Alas for the sons of passion! Whenever they are reproached

for plunging into love’s depths, they persist.

Perhaps you will escape them.” So I said to him,

“Away from me! Far be it from me to escape!

Look at her—may you never look!—and you will see

a figure pleading the lovers’ case:

a bough and a [sand dune]; the bough, so slender-waisted,

sways softly, while the dune quivers.

    A sun and a night—marvel at a morning sun

shining while night lies still and darkens.

Nectar of sweet saliva: in my liver

it kindles a blaze, while in my mouth it is snow.

In her face is beauty’s Kaaba; thus the

eye makes pilgrimage to the beauty of her face.”
