سرَتْ سُرَى الطّيفِ من مصرٍ إلى الشّامِ
And how can I thank the one who extended a kindly hand to me,
How can I thank one who lent me a hand
That traveled by night like a dream-phantom from Egypt to al-Sham?
That journeyed the path of ghosts from Egypt to Syria
رأىhe saw مكانِيmy place علَىdespite بُعدِيmy distance وقدand already عَشِيَتْhad grown dim
رأى مكانِي علَى بُعدِي وقد عَشِيَتْ

عنّي عيونُ أخِلاَّئِي وأيَّامِي
He saw where I was, despite my distance, while they had grown blind
He saw my place from afar while my eyes grew dim
To me—the eyes of my dear friends and my days—
My friends and days distanced themselves from me
مُحافِظاًfaithfully preserving لعُهوديmy covenants حينwhen أفردَنِيleft me alone
مُحافِظاً لعُهودي حين أفردَنِي
ظِلّيmy shadow وأعرَضَand turned away عنّيfrom me طيفُthe phantom of أحلاَميmy dreams
ظِلّي وأعرَضَ عنّي طيفُ أحلاَمي
Honoring my covenants, when I was left alone
Loyal to my pacts when my shadow isolated me
By my shadow, and the phantom of my dreams turned away from me.
The specter of my dreams turned away from me
