وأُمُّand the mother الغَدرِof treachery فيin الدُّنياthe world وَلودُprolific
A friend of mine grew estranged after affection,
A friend of mine turned hostile after affection
And the mother of treachery in this world is prolific.
The mother of betrayal is fertile in this world
أراهُmade him see مَلالُهhis weariness حَسَنيmy goodness قبيحاًas ugly
فصدَّso he turned away وأيسَرُand the easiest الغَدرِof treachery الصُّدودُturning away
His weariness made him see my goodness as ugly,
Boredom made him see my beauty as ugly
So he turned away—and turning away is the easiest form of treachery.
So he turned away, though turning away is hard for friends
وذَمّand he condemned اليومَtoday ماwhat حَمدتْهpraised it منّيin me
تجارِبُهhis experiences وأمسand yesterday بِهto it شهيدُa witness
And today he condemned what had been praised in me
He blamed today what he had praised in me yesterday
By his experiences—and yesterday bears witness to it.
His experiences attest, though yesterday he bore witness
ولستُand I do not ألومُهblame him فيماfor what أَتَاهُdid it
أساءَhe did wrong فرابَهُso it made him suspicious الفِعلُthe conduct الحميدُpraiseworthy
And I do not blame him for what he did:
I do not blame him for what came over him
He did wrong, so praiseworthy conduct made him suspicious.
A good deed turned bitter for him

And a sick person may find water bitter
The sick may find water bitter
In his mouth, though it is sweet and cool.
In his mouth, though it is very cold
