قالَت تُماضِرُ إِذ رَأَت مالي خَوى

قالَت تُماضِرُ إِذ رَأَت مالي خَوى

وَجَفا الأَقارِبُ فَالفُؤادُ قَريحُ

وَجَفا الأَقارِبُ فَالفُؤادُ قَريحُ

Tumadir said, when she saw my wealth had run out

She said while seeing my poverty and loneliness

And my relatives had turned away, leaving my heart wounded:

And the estrangement of my relatives, so my heart became depressed

ما لي رَأَيتُكِ في النَدِيِّ مُنَكِّساً

ما لي رَأَيتُكِ في النَدِيِّ مُنَكِّساً

وَصِباً كَأَنَّكَ في النَدِيِّ نَطيحُ

وَصِباً كَأَنَّكَ في النَدِيِّ نَطيحُ

“Why do I see you in the assembly, head bowed,

Why did I see you in luxury looking dejected

Ailing, as though you had been gored in the assembly?

And youthful as if you were gored in luxury

خاطِر بِنَفسِكَ كَي تُصيبَ غَنيمَةً

خاطِر بِنَفسِكَ كَي تُصيبَ غَنيمَةً

إِنَّ القُعودَ مَعَ العِيالِ قَبيحُ

إِنَّ القُعودَ مَعَ العِيالِ قَبيحُ

Risk your life so that you may win some booty;

Take care of yourself that you may gain spoils of war

Indeed, sitting idle with one's dependents is shameful.

For staying at home with the family is ugly

المالُ فيهِ مَهابَةٌ وَتَجِلَّةٌ

المالُ فيهِ مَهابَةٌ وَتَجِلَّةٌ

وَالفَقرُ فيهِ مَذَلَّةٌ وَفُضوحُ

وَالفَقرُ فيهِ مَذَلَّةٌ وَفُضوحُ

Wealth brings awe and reverence,

Wealth contains glory and splendor

And poverty brings humiliation and disgrace.”

While poverty contains humiliation and disgrace
