أَرِقتُI lay sleepless وَصُحبَتيand my companions بِمَضيقِat the narrow pass of عُمقِ'Umq
لِبَرقٍbecause of lightning فيin تِهامَةَTihamah مُستَطيرِspreading widely
I lay sleepless, my companions at the narrow pass of 'Umq,
because of lightning spreading far and wide in Tihamah.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI said اِستَهَلَّit began raining عَلىover قَديدٍQudayd
يَحورُturns back رَبابُهُits low clouds حَورَthe turning of الكَسيرِa crippled beast
Whenever I said, 'It has begun raining over Qudayd,'
its low clouds turned back like a crippled beast,
تَكَشُّفَuncovering itself like عائِذٍa newly foaled mare بَلقاءَpiebald تَنفيdriving away
ذُكورَmales الخَيلِthe horses عَنaway from وَلَدٍa foal شَفورِyoung
uncovering themselves like a piebald mare, newly foaled, driving
the stallions away from her young foal.
سَقىmay it water سَلمىSalma وَأَينَand where دِيارُthe dwellings of سَلمىSalma
إِذاwhen حَلَّتshe settled مُجاوِرَةَneighboring السَريرِal-Sarir
May it water Salma—and where are Salma's dwellings,
when she settles near al-Sarir,
إِذاwhen حَلَّتshe settled بِأَرضِin the land of بَنيthe sons of عَلِيِّ'Ali
وَأَهليand my people بَينَbetween زامِرَةٍZamirah وَكيرِand Kir
when she settles in the land of Banu 'Ali,
while my people are between Zamirah and Kir?
ذَكَرتُI remembered مَنازِلاًdwellings مِنof أُمِّUmm (mother of) وَهبٍWahb
مَحَلَّthe campsite of الحَيِّthe tribe أَسفَلَbelow ذيDhu (possessor of) النَقيرِal-Naqir
I remembered dwellings of Umm Wahb:
the tribe's campsite below Dhu al-Naqir.
وَأَحدَثُand the most recent مَعهَداًa familiar haunt مِنof أُمِّUmm (mother of) وَهبٍWahb
مَعَرَّسُناour overnight halt بِدارِin the territory of بَنيthe sons of النَضيرِal-Nadir
And the last haunt I shared with Umm Wahb
was our overnight camp in the land of Banu al-Nadir.
وَقالواand they said ماwhat تَشاءُyou wish فَقُلتُso I said أَلهوI enjoy myself
And they said, 'What do you wish?' I said, 'To enjoy myself
until morning, first and foremost,
بِآنِسَةِwith a charming woman الحَديثِconversation رُضابُsaliva فيهاher mouth
بُعَيدَshortly after النَومِsleep كَالعِنَبِlike grapes العَصيرِpressed
with a woman of charming conversation, whose mouth's moisture
just after sleep is like juice pressed from grapes.'
أَطَعتُI obeyed الآمِرينَthose commanding بِصَرمِto sever ties with سَلمىSalma
فَطارواso they flew off فيinto عِضاهِthe thorn trees of اليَستَعورِal-Yasta'ur
I obeyed those who urged me to break with Salma,
and off they flew into the thorn trees of al-Yasta'ur.
سَقَونيthey gave me to drink النَسءَwine ثُمَّthen تَكَنَّفونيthey surrounded me
عُداةُthe enemies of اللَهِGod مِنwith كَذِبٍlies وَزورِand falsehood
They gave me wine to drink, then surrounded me—
God's enemies—with lies and falsehood.
وَقالواand they said لَستَyou are not بَعدَafter فِداءِthe ransom of سَلمىSalma
بِمُغنٍwealthy ماwhat لَديكَyou possess وَلاnor فَقيرِpoor
And they said, 'After Salma's ransom, you are
neither rich with what you possess nor poor.'
أَلاah وَأَبيكَand by your father لَوif كَاليَومَas today أَمريmy affairs
وَمَنand who لَكَfor you بِالتَدَبُّرِwith foresight فيin الأُمورِaffairs
Ah, by your father, had my affairs then stood as they do today—
and who can assure you foresight in affairs?—
إِذاًthen لَمَلَكتُI would surely have retained عِصمَةَthe marriage bond of أُمُّUmm (mother of) وَهبٍWahb
عَلىdespite ماwhatever كانَthere was مِنof حَسَكِthorns of rancor الصُدورِthe breasts
then I would surely have retained my marriage bond with Umm Wahb,
despite all the thorns of rancor in our breasts.
فَياso O لِلناسِpeople كَيفَhow غَلَبتُI overpowered نَفسيmyself
عَلىto شَيءٍsomething وَيَكرَهُهُand hates it ضَميريmy conscience
So, people, how could I force myself
to something my conscience hates?
أَلاah ياO لَيتَنيif only I عاصَيتُI had disobeyed طَلقاًTalq
وَجَبّاراًand Jabbar وَمَنand who ليfor me مِنfrom أَميرِAmir
Ah, if only I had disobeyed Talq
and Jabbar—and who could protect me from Amir?
