إِنّيindeed, I اِمرُؤٌa man عافيthose seeking food إِنائِيَmy bowl شِركَةٌpartners
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa man عافيone seeking food إِنائِكَyour bowl واحِدُone
I am a man whose bowl is shared by those seeking food;
I am a man who shares his cup, while you are a man who drinks alone.
and you are a man whose bowl has but one eater.
Do you mock me for being lean, while you appear well-fed?
أَتَهزَأُdo you mock مِنّيat me أَنbecause سَمِنتَyou have grown fat وَأَنand because تَرىyou see
بِوَجهيon my face شُحوبَpallor الحَقِّduty وَالحَقُّand duty جاهِدُexhausting
Do you mock me because you have grown fat, and because you see
Truth has made me pale and thin, for truth is ever strenuous.
on my face the pallor of duty—and duty is exhausting?
I parcel out my flesh in many portions small,
أُقَسِّمُI divide جِسميmy body فيamong جُسومٍbodies كَثيرَةٍmany
وَأَحسوand I sip قَراحَplain, unmixed الماءِwater وَالماءُand the water بارِدُcold
I divide my body among many bodies,
to quench the people's thirst, though water cold be all.
and sip plain water—and the water is cold.
