أَعَيَّرتُمونيHave you reproached me? أَنَّthat أُمّيmy mother تَريعَةٌa bold, spirited woman
أَعَيَّرتُموني أَنَّ أُمّي تَريعَةٌ
وَهَلand do? يُنجِبَنthey bear noble offspring فيamong القَومِthe tribe غَيرُother than التَرائِعِspirited women
وَهَل يُنجِبَن في القَومِ غَيرُ التَرائِعِ
Have you reproached me because my mother is a bold, spirited woman?
You mocked me that my mother is an ignorant woman
And do any but spirited women bear noble offspring among the tribe?
And do the eminent in a tribe give birth other than to ignorant ones?
وَماand not طالِبُa seeker of الأَوتارِunavenged blood-debts إِلّاexcept اِبنُthe son of حُرَّةٍa freeborn woman

طَويلُ نَجادِ السَيفِ عاري الأَشاجِعِ
And none seeks vengeance for blood-debts but the son of a freeborn woman,
And the seeker of strings is none other than the son of a free woman
His sword-baldric long, his knuckles bare.
Tall, of high lineage by the sword, bare of forelocks
