إِذاwhen خَدِرَتgrows numb رِجليmy leg ذَكَرتُكِI remember you صادِقاًsincerely
وَصَرَّحتُand I speak openly إِذwhen أَدعوكِI call you بِاِسمِكِby your name لاnot أُكنيI use a byname
When my leg grows numb, I remember you in earnest,
And speak your name plainly when I call you, using no byname.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَتَغشانيsurely sweeps over me لِذِكرَكِat the mention of you رَوعَةٌa shudder
يَخِفُّgrows light لَهاbecause of it ماwhat بَينَbetween كَعبيmy ankle إِلىto قَرنيmy crown
And at the mention of you, a shudder surely sweeps over me,
All of me growing light with it, from ankle to crown.
وَأَفرَحُand I rejoice بِالأَمرِin the matter الَّذيwhich لاnot أُبينُهI discern it
يَقيناًwith certainty سِوىexcept أَنthat قَدindeed رَجَمتُI hazarded بِهِabout it ظَنّيmy conjecture
And I rejoice in something I cannot discern
With certainty—I have only hazarded a guess about it.
وَقُلتُand I said عَسىperhaps عِندَduring اِصطِباريmy patient endurance وَجَدتُهُI felt it
لِذِكرَتِهاbecause of her remembering إِيّايَme صَرَّتrang لَهاfor her أُذنيmy ear
And, feeling it as I endured patiently, I said, “Perhaps
My ear rang for her because she remembered me.”
فَياso, O نُعمُNuʿm قَلبيmy heart فيamong الأَسارىthe captives إِلَيكُمto you
رَهينٌheld in pledge وَقَدand indeed شَطَّhas grown distant المَزارُthe place to visit بِكُمwith you عَنّيfrom me
So, O Nuʿm, my heart is among your captives,
Held in pledge, though your dwelling has grown far from me.
قَدَرتِyou have power عَلىover نَفعيbenefiting me وَضُرّيand harming me فَأَجمِليso be gracious
وَفُكّيand release بِمَنٍّas a favor عَنfrom إِسارِكُمُyour captivity رَهنيmy pledge
You have power to help and harm me, so be gracious,
And, as a favor, free my pledged heart from your bonds.
لَكِto you الوُدُّaffection مِنّيfrom me ماas long as حَيِيتُI live مَعَwith الهَوىpassion
هَنيئاًyours to enjoy نِلاunclear; likely “without” مَنٍّreminders of favor وَقَلَّand it is little لَكُمfor you مِنّيfrom me
My affection and passion are yours as long as I live,
Yours to enjoy, [without] reminders of favor—yet too little from me for you.
أَبَيتُI refused فَلَمand did not أَسمَعI heed بِهاabout her قَولَthe words of كاشِحٍa spiteful foe
قَديماًlong ago فَأَنِّبso reproach ماas much as بَداseems fit لَكَto you أَوor دَعنيleave me alone
I refused, and did not heed a spiteful foe’s words about her
In days past; so reproach me as you please, or leave me be.
