Visit the woman with the beauty spot, and find out for us

whether her affection remains true to the pledge or has broken off.

And tell her: separation makes strangers

of us and you; I have feared it might become complete,

driving our affections far apart; we see that our nearness

and yours is possible if people attend a seasonal gathering.

And tell her: do not accept an ill-wisher's words,

and tell him, if he errs: may your nose be rubbed in dust.

And tell her: distance from you has not made us forget,

nor a lying talebearer's words, even if he spreads slander.

And tell her: among all people, no noble woman is

dearer to us than you, or more honored—none at all.

And tell her: never listen to an ill-wisher's

speech, though he sets up the warp before you and weaves the weft.

And tell her: I have committed no offense for you to reproach

me justly; rather, you reproached me by inventing guilt.

So the two told her, and the flood of her tears burst forth,

as a thread lets fall the pearls strung upon it.

Like water streaming from a bān bough whose shoots had softened,

on which steady rain had poured, followed by drizzle.

Then, when she saw my gaze upon her, she brightened,

for fear her tears would flow, smiling against her will.

And she told her two sisters: go with protective care,

then visit Abu al-Khattab in secret, and greet him.

And tell him: by God, water for the thirsty is not

more desirable to us than meeting you—so know this.

And tell him: no instigator's words have gained currency

with me, nor has he sought approval or shown resentment.

And tell him: if you commit an offense, I shall count it

as kindness, if the talebearers seek to speak.

So I said: go, both of you, and tell her: you are his concern

and his greatest wish, among those of clear speech and those without it.

    وَإِن قَرُبَت دارٌ بِكُم فَكَأَنَّما

    When you depart, the bliss of life and love departs;

and if your dwelling draws near, it is as though

he sees that he has gathered the world's bliss for himself.

He sees despair as a loss, and your nearness as a prize.

Why, then, should you surpass us in love? Yet we

see our affection as longer-lasting and more enduring.
