قَدindeed هاجَstirred قَلبَكَyour heart بَعدَafter السُلوَةِsolace الوَطَنُthe homeland
وَالشَوقُand longing يُحدِثُهُarouses it لِلنازِحِfor the one far away الشَجَنُsorrow
The homeland has stirred your heart after you had found solace.
Your heart has become restless after tranquility, O homeland
And sorrow awakens longing in the one far away.
And yearning makes the emigrant shed tears of sorrow
مَنwhoever كانَwas يَسأَلُasking عَنّاabout us أَينَwhere مَنزِلُناour dwelling
فَالأُقحُوانَةُthen al-Uqhuwanah مِنّاof ours مَنزِلٌa dwelling قَمَنُfitting
Whoever has been asking about us, where our dwelling lies—
Whoever asked about us, where is our dwelling
Then al-Uqhuwanah is a fitting dwelling for us.
The wilderness for us is dwelling enough
وَماand what لِدارٍfor a dwelling عَفَتwas effaced مِنfrom بَعدِafter ساكِنِهاits inhabitant
وَماand what لِعَيشٍfor a life بِهاin it إِذwhen ذاكُمُthat ثَمَنُa price
And what worth has a dwelling effaced after its inhabitant was gone,
No home remains chaste after its inhabitants have gone
And what price has life there in those days?
And what good is living there when you are the price
إِذاwhen الجِمارُal-Jimar حَرىًdepleted مِمَّنof those who يَسيرُtravels بِهِthrough it
وَالحَجُّand the pilgrims قُدماًlong ago بِهِin it مَعروفٌwell known الثُكَنُthe encampments
When al-Jimar lay depleted of those who passed through it,
When the neighbors deplore whoever travels with them
And the pilgrims’ encampments there were known of old.
And the Hajj pilgrimage, well-known for its assemblies
إِذwhen نَلبَسُwe wear العَيشَlife صَفواًin purity لاnot يُكَدِّرُهُclouds it
جَفوُharshness الوُشاةِthe talebearers وَلاnor يَنبوis harsh بِناto us زَمَنُtime
When we wore life in its purity, unclouded by
When we lived purely without troubles
The harshness of talebearers, nor did time turn against us.
Not harmed by the injustice of evildoers or the vicissitudes of time
إِذاwhenever اِجتَمَعناwe gathered هَجَرناwe shunned كُلَّevery فاحِشَةٍindecency
عِندَat اللِقاءِthe meeting وَذاكُمand that مَجلِسٌa gathering حَسَنُfine
Whenever we gathered, we shunned every indecency
When gathered we shunned all shamelessness
At our meeting—and that was a fine gathering.
In that gathering which was a fine council
فَذاكَso that دَهرٌan age مَضَتhas passed عَنّاfrom us ضَلالَتُهُits folly
وَكُلُّand every دَهرٍage لَهُfor it فيin سَيرِهِits passage سَنَنُa path
So that was an age whose folly has passed from us,
Such was an era whose misguidance has passed from us
And every age has its own path as it passes.
And each era follows its own traditions in its course
لَيتَif only الهَوىlove لَمhad not يُقَرِّبنيbrought me near إِلَيكِto you وَلَمand had not
أَعرِفكِI know you إِذsince كانَwas حَظّيmy share مِنكُمُfrom you all الحَزَنُsorrow
If only love had not brought me near you, and I had not
Would that passion had not brought me near you nor
Known you, since my share from you all was sorrow.
Caused me know you when my fortune with you was sorrow
