The heart has become lovesick and tormented

over a maiden among the most mistrustful of people.

One day I said to her, as she played the oud

with her plectrum; she sang, and it sang:

If only I were the back of your oud one day,

then, when you embraced me, you would be its belly.

She wept, then turned away, then said:

Who brought you this from us today?

Had you feared coldness and rejection,

you would not have sought this from us, by your life.

I said, when I saw [unclear wording: 'your beloved, from it']:

May my father be your ransom! What harm is there to you in my wishing?
