ذَكَرَrecalled القَلبُthe heart ذِكرَةًa memory
ذَكَرَ القَلبُ ذِكرَةً
مِنof حَبيبٍa beloved مُزايِلِdeparting
مِن حَبيبٍ مُزايِلِ
The heart called up a memory
of a departing beloved.
ماجِدٌa noble man قَدindeed صَباfell in love بِكُمwith you
ماجِدٌ قَد صَبا بِكُم
وَالصِبىand youthful passion غَيرُnot طائِلِbeneficial
وَالصِبى غَيرُ طائِلِ
A noble man has fallen in love with you,
and youthful passion is of no avail,
مُستَمِرٍّpressing onward لِطَيَّةٍtoward a destination
مُستَمِرٍّ لِطَيَّةٍ
سالِكٍtravelling فيamid الغَوائِلِthe perils
سالِكٍ في الغَوائِلِ
pressing onward toward a destination,
travelling amid perils.
وَلَقَدand indeed خِفتُI feared خُلَّةًa plight
وَلَقَد خِفتُ خُلَّةً
لَستُI am not مِنهاfrom it بِوائِلِable to escape
لَستُ مِنها بِوائِلِ
And indeed I feared a plight
from which I cannot escape,
إِنif نَأَتكُمhave kept you far away دِيارُناour dwellings
إِن نَأَتكُم دِيارُنا
وَاِلتِباسُand the entanglement الحَبائِلِthe snares
وَاِلتِباسُ الحَبائِلِ
if our dwellings have kept you far away,
and the entanglement of snares,
وَصَرَمتُمand you severed ties with مُشَيَّعاًa dauntless man
وَصَرَمتُم مُشَيَّعاً
وُدُّهُhis affection غَيرُnot زائِلِfading
وُدُّهُ غَيرُ زائِلِ
and you have forsaken a dauntless man
whose affection never fades.
أَحدَثَbrought about الصَرمَthe estrangement بَينَناbetween us
أَحدَثَ الصَرمَ بَينَنا
إِذwhen بَداemerged قَولُan utterance قائِلِa speaker
إِذ بَدا قَولُ قائِلِ
The estrangement between us was brought about
by a speaker's words, when they emerged,
إِذwhen بَدَتshe appeared بَينَamong نِسوَةٍwomen
إِذ بَدَت بَينَ نِسوَةٍ
جازِئاتٍcontented عَقائِلِnoble ladies
جازِئاتٍ عَقائِلِ
when she appeared among women,
contented, noble ladies.
