لَقَدindeed شابَhas grown gray هَذاthis man بَعدَناin our absence وَتَنَكَّراand become unrecognizable
The daughter of the two Bakrs says, the day they met us:
This man has indeed grown gray in our absence and become unrecognizable.
فَمِثلُfor the like of الَّذيwhat عايَنتُI witnessed شَيَّبَturned gray لِمَّتيmy locks
وَمِثلُand the like of الَّذيwhat أُخفيI conceal مِنَof الحُزنِgrief نَكَّراmade unrecognizable
For such things as I have witnessed have grayed my locks,
and such grief as I hide has made me unrecognizable.
فَكَمfor many a فيهِمُamong them مِنof سَيِّدٍa chief قَدindeed رُزِئتُهُI have been bereaved of him
وَذيand one with شَيبَةٍgray hair كَالبَدرِlike the full moon أَروَعَmajestic أَزهَراradiant
For many a chief among them have I lost,
and many a gray-haired man, like the full moon, majestic and radiant.
أولَئِكَthose هُمthey قَوميmy people وَجَدِّكَby your grandfather لاnot أَرىI see
لَهُمto them شَبَهاًan equal فيمَنamong those who عَلىupon الأَرضِthe earth مَعشَراa company
Those are my people; by your grandfather, I do not see
a company to match them among those upon the earth—
أَذَبَّmore protective وَراءَbehind المُستَضيفِthe seeker of hospitality إِذاwhen دَعاhe calls
وَأَضرَبَand harder-hitting فيon يَومِthe day of الهِياجِbattle السَنَوَّراarmor
more staunch in defending the seeker of hospitality when he calls,
and harder-hitting against armor on the day of battle,
وَأَفضَلَand sounder أَحلاماًin judgment وَأَعظَمَand greater نائِلاًin bounty
وَأَقرَبَand nearer مَعروفاًin kindness وَأَبعَدَand further مُنكَراfrom wrongdoing
and sounder in judgment and greater in bounty,
and readier with kindness and further from wrongdoing.
وَإِنand if أَنعَمواthey bestow favors ثُنّواthey follow up عَلَيهِon it بِصالِحِwith something good
وَلَمand did not يُتبِعواthey follow الإِحسانَkindness مِنّاًreminders of favors مُكَدَّراembittering
And if they bestow a favor, they follow it with another kindness,
and never follow kindness with embittering reminders of their favors.
