بانَdeparted الخَليتُthe companions (uncertain reading) وَبَينُهُمand their parting شَغَفُconsuming passion
وَالدارُand the dwelling أَحياناًsometimes بِهِمwith them قَذَفُfar away
The companions have departed; their parting is anguish.
The longing between us was ardent
And sometimes their dwelling lies far away.
And the house would at times cast us off
ماnot عَوَّدوكَthey accustomed you بِنَأيِwith the remoteness of دارِهِمُtheir dwelling
قُربَnearness الجِوارِneighborliness فَفيمَso why تَلتَهِفُyou lament
They have not accustomed you, with their dwelling distant,
They did not accustom you to staying away from their house
To close neighborliness—so why do you lament?
Why yearn when neighbors are near?
وَلَقَدand indeed تَرىyou see أَنthat لاnot يُذَلِّلُهاit softens her
أَنَّthat الفُؤادَthe heart بِذِكرِهاwith remembering her كَلِفُinfatuated
And indeed you see that she is not softened
You see that it does not humble her
By the heart's passionate attachment to her memory.
That the heart is burdened with the thought of her
زَعَمواthey claimed بِأَنَّthat البَينَparting بَعدَafter غَدٍtomorrow
فَالقَلبُso the heart مِمّاfrom what أَزمَعواthey resolved يَجِفُtrembles
They claimed that parting would come the day after tomorrow,
They claimed that tomorrow the distance grows far
So the heart trembles at what they have resolved.
Yet the heart is desiccated by their intentions
حَلَفواthey swore لَقَدindeed قَطَعواthey severed بَينُهُمُtheir bond
وَحَلَفتُand I swore أَلفاًa thousand times مِثلَماjust as حَلَفواthey swore
They swore; indeed, they had severed their bond,
They have sworn they cut ties between them
And I swore a thousand times, just as they swore.
And I swore a thousand oaths just as they swore
لَمnot أَنسَI forget مَوقِفَناour standing place وَمَوقِفَهاand her standing place
لِتَراجُعٍto exchange words وَلَحَينُناand indeed our doom يَقِفُstands
I have not forgotten where we stood, and where she stood,
I do not forget our stance, nor hers
To exchange words, while our very doom stood by.
Awaiting return, our stances frozen
نَشكوwe complain وَتَشكوand she complains بَعضَsome of ماwhat وَجَدَتshe felt
كُلٌّeach لِوَشكِto the imminence of البَينِparting مُعتَرِفُacknowledging
We complain, and she complains of some of what she felt;
We complain, and she complains, of what we each felt
Each acknowledges the imminence of parting.
Each admitting agony from the separation
وَمَقالَهاand her words وَدُموعُهاand her tears سَجَمٌstreaming
أَقلِلlessen حَنينَكَyour longing حينَwhen تَنصَرِفُyou depart
And her words, with her tears streaming:
Her words and her tears, a hot brand
“Lessen your longing when you depart
Lessen your yearning when you leave
عَنّاfrom us إِذاwhen دارٌa dwelling بِكُمwith you (plural) نَزَحَتbecame distant
وَدَعاand called لِأُخرىfor another woman قَلبُكَyour heart الطَرِفُfickle
From us, when your dwelling takes you far away,
If a house turns you all away from us
And your fickle heart calls for another woman.”
And your fickle heart is tempted by another
