بانَتdeparted سُلَيمىSulayma فَالفُؤادُso the heart قَريحُwounded
وَدُموعُand the tears عَينيof my eye فيin الرِداءِthe cloak سُفوحُflowing freely
Sulayma has departed, and the heart is wounded;
Sulayma has departed, so the heart is wounded.
the tears of my eyes stream down my robe.
And the tears of my eye pour onto my cloak.
وَلَقَدand indeed جَرىpassed لَكَfor you يَومَon the day of حَزمِthe ridge of سُوَيقَةٍSuwayqa
فيماamong what يُعِفُّbeats its wings سانِحٌa rightward-crossing bird وَبَريحُand a leftward-crossing bird
And indeed, on the day of Ḥazm Suwayqa, there crossed your path,
And indeed, on the day at Hazm Suwayqa, there passed before you,
while a sāniḥ and a barīḥ wheeled in flight,
among the wing-beating birds, a rightward flier and a leftward one:
أَحوىdark-colored القَوادِمِthe primary wing-feathers بِالبَياضِwith white مُلَمَّعٌflecked
قَلِقُrestless المَواقِعِthe perching places بِالفِراقِof parting يَصيحُit cries out
one dark of primary feather, dappled with white,
dark in its primary wing-feathers, flecked with white,
restless from perch to perch, crying out at separation.
restless at its perches, crying of parting.
حَسَنٌpleasant لَدَيَّto me حَديثُthe talk of مَنone whom أَحبَبتُهُI have loved him
وَحَديثُand the talk of مَنone who لاnot يُستَلَذُّis found pleasing قَبيحُugly
Sweet to me is the speech of the one I love;
Pleasant to me is the talk of one I have loved;
the speech of one who gives no delight is ugly.
and ugly is the talk of one who gives no pleasure.
الحُبُّlove أَبغَضُهُthe most hateful of it إِلَيَّto me أَقَلُّهُthe least of it
صَرِّحspeak plainly بِذاكَof that وَراحَةٌand a relief تَصريحُplain speaking
Of love, what I hate most is the least of it.
Of love, the least is what I hate most.
Say that openly—for open speech is a relief.
Speak plainly of that; plain speech is a relief.
