تَقولُshe says وَعَينُهاand her eye تُذريsheds دُموعاًtears
لَهاthey have نَسَقٌan ordered succession عَلىdown الخَدَّينِboth cheeks تَجريthey flow
She says, as her eye sheds tears,
You say, while your eyes shed tears
Flowing in ordered succession down both cheeks:
That flow down your cheeks
أَلَستَare you not? أَقَرَّmost pleasing مَنwho يَمشيwalks لِعَينيto my eye
وَأَنتَand you الهَمُّthe concern فيin الدُنياthe world وَذِكريand my remembrance
Are you not, of all who walk, the greatest delight to my eye?
Are you not closer than one who walks before my eyes?
And you are my concern in this world and the one I remember.
Yet you are the worry in life and my remembrance
أَماis there not? لَكَfor you حاجَةٌa need فيماfor what لَدَيناwe have
تَكُنmay be لَكَfor you عِندَناwith us حَقّاًa rightful due فَأَدريso I may know
Have you no wish for what we have,
Do you not need what we have?
Which would be your rightful due from us, so that I may know?
Let there be a right for you with us that I know
أَمِنwas it out of? سَخَطٍdispleasure عَلَيَّwith me صَدَدتَyou turned away عَنّيfrom me
حَمَلتَyou carried جِنازَتيmy bier وَشَهِدتَand you were present at قَبريmy grave
Was it out of displeasure with me that you turned away from me?
Is it from anger at me you turned away from me?
You carried my bier and were present at my grave.
You carried my funeral and witnessed my grave
أَشَهراًfor a month? كُلَّهُall of it إِلّاexcept ثَلاثاًthree
أَقَمتَyou persisted عَلىin مُصارَمَتيcutting ties with me وَهَجريand forsaking me
For a whole month, save three days,
Months in full but only three
Did you persist in cutting ties with me and forsaking me?
You persisted in tormenting me and shunning me
