حَيِّsalute رَبعاًa dwelling-place أَقوىbecame deserted وَرَسماًand a trace مُحيلاweathered
وَعِراصاًand courtyards أَمسَتbecame لِهِندٍbelonging to Hind مُثولاstill standing
Salute a deserted dwelling and a weathered trace,
Revive a quarter stronger in form
And Hind's courtyards, still standing in view.
And ruins that became for India a dwelling
فَعَفاthen effaced الدَهرُthe ages وَالزَمانُand time عَلَيهاover them
وَأَجالَتand swept بِهاthrough them الرِياحُthe winds ذُيولاtrailing skirts
Then age and time wore them away,
Time has pardoned it
And the winds swept their trailing skirts across them.
And the winds have swept it with their trails
لَستُI do not أَنسىforget مِنهاfrom her عَشيَّةَthe evening رُحناwe departed
قَولَهاher words عُجturn aside عَلَيَّto me مِنكَfrom you قَليلاa little
I do not forget what I heard from her the evening we departed:
I do not forget an evening we departed
Her words: 'Turn aside to me for a little while,
Her saying "Stay with me a little" pained me
أَقضِlet me satisfy مِنsome of لَذَّتيmy pleasure وَأَعهَدُand I know إِنّيindeed I
لاnot أَرىI consider ذاthis الصُدودَaloofness مِنكَfrom you جَميلاfair
So I may have my share of pleasure; and I know that I
Fulfill my pleasure and trust I
Do not find this aloofness of yours fair.
Do not see such aloofness from you beautiful
وَأَجِبنيand answer me وَأَنتَand you are أَوجَدُmost angry شَيءٍanything
وَلَكَand for you الوُدُّlove خالِصاًpure مَبذولاfreely given
And answer me, even at your angriest;
Answer me while you are most able
And yours is love, pure and freely given.
For you is sincere love given
وَلَكَand for you الوُدُّlove دائِماًalways ماas long as بَقيناwe remain alive
قاطِعاًsevering ties بَعدُthereafter كُنتَyou were ليwith me أَوor وَصولاkeeping close ties
And yours is love, always, as long as we live,
For you is lasting love what remains of us
Whether afterward you break with me or remain close.
Whether later you were to me united or separated
ماnot تَحَرَّيتُI acted deliberately إِذwhen عَصَيتُI disobeyed وَلَكِنand yet
قُلتُI said ماwhat قُلتُI said فَاِعلَمَنso know for certain تَعديلاto set things right
I did not act deliberately when I disobeyed; rather,
I did not intend when I disobeyed but
I said what I said—know this—to set things right.
I said what I said so know my amending

So accept gratefully today what has come to you;
So accept today what came to you in gratitude
Never be quick to tire of your beloved.'
Do not be to the intimate disaffected
