Once I appealed to Hind and two girls the same age
I yearned to meet Hind time and again
as her, when we met at Qarn al-Muqattaʿ,
When we met at the broken horn

to stop by for a day, or halt for a night,
Whether for the ascent of a day or the wedding of a night
with us, bringing us together before parting.
Before our gathering shattered

We said, if not for the companions behind us
of ours behind us, we would have turned aside without scruple.”
We would have stayed and not hesitated

Then a girl spoke—I had thought her
A girl I thought oblivious
unworldly, in a waist-wrap, not yet dressed in a tunic—
In an untailored gown

They said to her, “May your horn never grow! Open up
They told her, your horn has not aged, so open for us
for us a hidden way through this affair; we will listen.”
A small door, hiding from this matter, we may listen

And whoever fears your company’s companions, turn back
