أَيُّهاO you العاتِبُthe reproacher فيهاconcerning her عُصيتاyou were disobeyed
أَيُّها العاتِبُ فيها عُصيتا
لَنwill not تُطاعَyou be obeyed الدَهرَever حَتّىuntil تَموتاyou die
لَن تُطاعَ الدَهرَ حَتّى تَموتا
O you who reproach me over her, you have been disobeyed.
O you who blame her, through her I disobeyed,
You will never be obeyed, ever, until you die.
You will not be obeyed forever until you die.
إِنif تَكُنyou should be أَصبَحتَyou have become فيناamong us مُطاعاًobeyed
إِن تَكُن أَصبَحتَ فينا مُطاعاً
فَلَكَthen yours is العُتبىappeasement بِأَنin that لاmay not رَضيتاyou be pleased
فَلَكَ العُتبى بِأَن لا رَضيتا
If you have come to be obeyed among us,
If you have become obeyed among us in the morning,
Then your appeasement is this: may you never be pleased.
Then blame yourself because you were not content.
