O my two friends, my sickness visited me today,

and its malady wore away my bones, to my doom,

because of a stubborn one who persisted and grew arrogant today,

and thought turning away was no injustice.

He turned away deliberately, and incurred, when he turned from me,

O my friend, his sin and mine.

Whether you give generously or withhold, praise

is yours from one who keeps ties with us; you are not blamed.

Or you say, 'You kept at poetry until

you disclosed it to the people, though you gave no name.'

    For your dwelling-place and

your beauty revealed about you what I used to conceal.

Your house is the house you raise a roof upon,

and upon virtuous character it grows.

You are of the refined stock of Taym,

at glory's heights, between a maternal uncle and a paternal uncle.
