    O my two friends, if you do not help,

    then spare me blame today—leave me be.

    لَستُ أَدري اليَومَ ماذا صَنَعا

    And come to me with a young gazelle;

    I do not know what she has done today.

    رَفَّ بِالفُرقَةِ ثُمَّ اِرتَفَعا

    A bird sped from her, bearing separation;

    it fluttered with parting, then rose aloft.

    She asked me: Have you abandoned amusement, or

    have its days passed, so it has ceased?

    I said: No; rather, the time has passed

    when I would go with it wherever it went.

    That was when we were Salma's neighbors,

    heedless of whoever slandered or spread tales.

    Even if all His creatures upon the earth had striven

    to part us, separately and together,

    my aim with her, amid their talk, would have been

    to be the one honored and followed,

    when she said: How can I forget, now that

    those who spread tales have spread word of us today?
