O my heart, tell me—and in distance there is relief—

when Hind resolves on separation, what will you do?

Will you resign yourself to despair, or yearn with passion

in Hind's wake, when she has departed, and grieve?

And surely patience is better when she departs with her love,

and so is restraining a heart that would bow before separation.

And the staff was struck for you concerning union with Hind

long ago, as it used to be struck for one endowed with sound judgment.

You grieved, yet it is not over distressing Hind through her secret

or revealing a secret meant for me that you grieve,

but over people learning that I

pursue you without any favor from you.

So do not deprive a soul in distress over you,

and, from the intensity of longing, it has nearly departed.

And there is no pleasure in any love but yours,

nor do I grieve for anyone after you.

Nor is union with my beloved to be hoped for,

and my secret has no place with anyone but me.
