O friend, do not reproach me, and speak rightly.

I see love killing me with grief.

Juml is this heart's talk when

it wakes, and its dreams when it sleeps.

If you wish, I will tell you the certain truth, so that

you may excuse me; or I will swear earnestly

by God: were it not for the hope, when she withheld

her kindness today, that she would give generously tomorrow,

then love for her would surely have shattered my liver,

if any love can shatter the liver.

That is not for any bounty bestowed, nor

a favor she has done me in recompense,

but only folly; and I am infatuated,

taking my error in loving her for sound judgment.

Do you not see me steeped in a sickness

that has lined my eye's inner corner with sleeplessness as kohl?

I have loved with a love like madness, and it has indeed

worn out my bones and changed my body.
