O early riser, intent on parting from me,

After you stirred my longing with your talk.

Would that I knew, the morning they departed—and among them was

The sun's likeness—where reunion might be hoped for.

Anguish assails you, O heart, because of her,

If they urge their camels onward to depart.

We have healed our souls—if there is a cure

For love of her in her embrace and mine—

When she held back her tears, then said:

“Parting is near, and so is the companions' departure.

My heart is indeed pledged to you today,

To my misery, and for love of the people of Iraq.”
