يَومَ اِلتَقَينا عَشِيَّةَ النَفَرِ
My sorrow has stirred, and memory has returned to me
of the day we met, on the evening of departure,

حَجُّ سَريعُ الطَوافِ وَالصَدَرِ
in the pass, on the side of ‘Uqbah’s house, while the
pilgrims hastened through circumambulation and return.

When I almost—had not modesty restrained me—
revealed with a glance what I had concealed.

It was as though, when the riders met, the robe she drew
close over herself let a moon shine through.

She grows yielding, until one says she has beguiled
someone with no experience of women.

Yet whenever I sought an unguarded moment in her,
she proved chaste, seldom off her guard.

She said to a pampered companion of her own age,
like a white gazelle seeking the tender shoots of trees:

“Is there a messenger who will keep our wishes secret,
bearing a welcome request to ‘Umar?”

and said in secrecy and concealment:

When he came to me, I slipped out discreetly,
with a keen, double-edged sword of patterned steel.
