    وَاِعتَرَتني الهُمومُ بِالتَسهادِ

    My night has grown long, and I find no sleep;

and worries have beset me with sleeplessness.

    And I remembered Nuʿm’s words—and the

memory of her was something that stirred my heart—

the day she said to her companion, “Ask him:

Does he intend to leave in the evening, or is he setting out in the morning?

And beware lest any eye see you; and if you

meet any of those talkative enemies,

then make your pretext a letter meant for you,

entrusted for delivery, with something of the secret showing openly.

Then say, ‘You have broken faith, O greatest liar of

all people, townsfolk and desert-dwellers alike.’”
