My heart's sorrow has indeed been deepened

    By a trace and a time-worn dwelling.

A deserted dwelling belonging to Hind,

    Once inhabited for a while.

None of its people are there,

Save the gazelles staying apart with their young.

I once was at ease among them,

    Playing with them and rejoicing,

    In Hind's days, when love

From us to Hind was freely given.

Then time stood between us and her—

A grievous time, by my life.

We spent the night, my heart anxious,

More fearful of Hind's breaking with me,

When she sent word in secret—

Indeed, the lover is the sender—

    Hind says: 'Come to us.'

So I said: 'No, I will not!'

By God, I will not come to you

    Until the first one visits.

Of your love, O Hind, never

Shall I be heedless as long as I live.
