My heart has grown sorrowful over al-Qatul, the slayer,

Distraught in mind—if only she would settle her debts to it!

A messenger, after visiting her, said, “Rejoice!

Today we have seen her show you gentleness.”

If she intends sincere affection, my friend,

She has indeed tormented my heart for years.

She sent word: “We fear spiteful women—

    Liars around us—and spying eyes.

Keep away from us throughout the land, if you fear

That, should we meet you once, you might betray us.”

“You have God as surety, my fidelity, and my covenant:

We shall not betray you as long as we live.

And whoever you have loved shall always remain

Beloved and honored in my eyes, as long as you live.

    أَغدَرُ الناسِ مَن يَخونُ الأَمينا

    And trust shall not be despoiled in my keeping;

The most treacherous of people is whoever betrays the trustworthy.

And we shall turn our love verses elsewhere, so that

We leave people throwing out conjectures.

And I shall forsake all women but you.

Are you content?” She said, “Yes, we are content.”
