My companion said to me, to learn what ailed me:

'Do you love al-Qatul, al-Rabab's sister?'

I said, 'My longing for her is like your longing for water

when you are denied a cool drink.'

Who will carry word to al-Thurayya that I

can no longer bear her estrangement—by the Book!

Umm Nawfal, when she summoned her, took

my lifeblood; my slayer knows no repentance.

When she said to her, 'Answer,' she replied,

'Who called me?' She said, 'Abu al-Khattab.'

They brought her forth, like an oryx, swaying gracefully

among five full-breasted maidens, all of an age.

So she answered the summons, just as do

men who hope for a good reward.

And she was kept secluded; upon her there pooled

the dew of youth, on the skin of her cheeks.

A statue in the keeping of a devout monk,

her likeness fashioned beside the sanctuary.

And fair, full-breasted maidens surrounded her,

    with radiant cheeks and flanks.

Then they said, 'Do you love her?' I said, 'Overwhelmingly—

a love as great as the number of stars, pebbles, and grains of dust.'

When al-Qatul and her neck were made more lovely

by a beautiful hue that shimmered like gold,

she reminded me of the sun's splendor when

it rose out of darkness and cloud.

Then she swayed in the abundant beauty of her form,

    walking gracefully, like a serpent.

They hung about her neck, of cloves and pearls,

    a scented necklace—ah, what a necklace!

    فَسَلوها ماذا أَحَلَّ اِغتِصابي

    She whose mouth pours forth musk robbed me of my soul;

so ask her what made robbing me lawful.
