Long has Zaynab's household turned away,

out of wilful harshness, though we harbour no hatred.

And from our childhood, my heart was bound to her,

until white hair crowned our heads.

Her cord is strong with us, but my cord

with her is weak in its strands, worn to shreds.

She looked towards us that day at Farʿ Laft,

a glance whose return was a flash,

when she said to a procession like the oryx of the sands,

for which the meadows willingly yielded their herbage:

"Turn the mules towards the youth; let us greet

him with what lovesick hearts conceal,

and I shall tell him what I have harboured because of him,

since al-Marāḍ lies empty today for travel."
