أَلاListen! ياO أَيُّهاyou الواشيtale-bearer بِهِندٍabout Hind
أَلا يا أَيُّها الواشي بِهِندٍ
أَضُرّيmy harm? رُمتَyou sought أَمor حاوَلتَyou attempted نَفعيmy benefit
أَضُرّي رُمتَ أَم حاوَلتَ نَفعي
Listen, O you who carry tales about Hind:
Did you seek my harm, or try to benefit me?
أَقُلتَdid you say? الرُشدُsound judgment صَرمُsevering حِبالِthe bonds of هِندٍHind
أَقُلتَ الرُشدُ صَرمُ حِبالِ هِندٍ
وَماand ... not إِنemphatic particle ماwhat أَتَيتَyou brought بِهِwith it بِبِدعِat all novel
وَما إِن ما أَتَيتَ بِهِ بِبِدعِ
Did you say wisdom lies in severing the bonds with Hind?
And what you have brought is nothing new at all.
أَتَأمُرُdo you command? بِالفَجيعَةِto inflict heartbreak ذاone possessing صَفاءٍsincere affection
أَتَأمُرُ بِالفَجيعَةِ ذا صَفاءٍ
كَريمَgenerous الوَصلِin affection لَمdid not يَهمُمcontemplate بِفَجعِcausing grief
كَريمَ الوَصلِ لَم يَهمُم بِفَجعِ
Do you bid a faithful lover inflict heartbreak—
One generous in love, who never thought of causing grief?
وَأَقعُدُand I sit بَعدَafter قَطعِcutting الحَبلِthe cord أَدعوI call
وَأَقعُدُ بَعدَ قَطعِ الحَبلِ أَدعو
إِلىfor صِلَةٍreunion وَقَطعُwhile cutting الحَبلِthe cord صُنعيmy own doing
إِلى صِلَةٍ وَقَطعُ الحَبلِ صُنعي
And shall I sit, after cutting the cord, calling
