وَأُمسي قَريباً لا أَزورُكِ كُلثُما
It is sorrow enough that the dwelling brings us together,
Enough of sorrow that home united us,
And I spend the evening nearby without visiting you, Kulthum.
Yet I seldom visit you each evening.

Leave the heart be, lest its madness grow beyond what
The heart is prone to increasing madness
It already suffers from you—or heal its concealed burning anguish.
With that which comes from you or secretly healing its injury.
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas لاnot يَعدوgoes beyond هَواهُhis love لِسانُهُhis tongue
وَمَن كانَ لا يَعدو هَواهُ لِسانُهُ
فَقَدso indeed حَلَّsettled فيin قَلبيmy heart هَواكِlove for you وَخَيَّماand encamped
فَقَد حَلَّ في قَلبي هَواكِ وَخَيَّما
And though a man's love may go no farther than his tongue,
He whose tongue does not exceed his love,
Love for you has indeed settled in my heart and pitched its tent.
Has lodged his love for you residing in my heart.

وَلَكِنَّهُ قَد خالَطَ اللَحمَ وَالدَما
And it is not mere embellishment of the tongue and artful phrasing,
It is not by adorning the tongue and shaping it,
But it has mingled with flesh and blood.
Rather it has mingled with flesh and blood.
