Is it over a dwelling's traces that your tears well up,
foolishly? And what use is questioning what cannot speak?

Where Jamʿ and the far end of Muḥassar meet,
its landmarks have almost worn away with long absence.
ذَكَرتُI recalled بِهِthere ماwhat قَدalready مَضىhad passed وَتَذَكُّريand my remembrance

There I recalled what had passed—and my remembrance
of a beloved, together with the dwelling's traces, stirs longing—
لَيالِيَnights مِنfrom دَهرٍa time إِذِwhen الحَيُّthe clan جيرَةٌneighbors
وَإِذand when هُوَit مَأهولُinhabited الخَميلَةِthe grove مونِقُlovely
nights of a time when the clan were neighbors,
and when its grove was inhabited and it was lovely;
مَقاماًa place to stay لَناfor us ذاتَat the time of العِشاءِevening وَمَجلِساًand a meeting place

a place for us to stay one evening, and a meeting place
there, unspoiled for us by any interference;
وَمَمشىand the walk of فَتاةٍa maiden بِالكِساءِwith the cloak تَكُنُّناshe shelters us

and the walk of a maiden with a cloak, sheltering us
with it beneath a rain cloud whose lightning glittered.

شُعاعٌa radiance بَداappeared يُعشيdazzles العُيونَthe eyes وَيُشرِقُand shines
Raindrops wet the garment's upper folds, and beneath it
a radiance appeared, dazzling the eyes and shining.
فَأَحسَنُso the loveliest شَيءٍthing بَدءُthe beginning of أَوَّلِthe first part of لَيلِناour night
وَآخِرُهُand its end حَزمٌprudence إِذاwhen نَتَفَرَّقُwe part
So the loveliest thing is our night's very beginning,
and its end calls for caution when we part.
