Indeed, the companions dispersed yesterday,
Yesterday the companions parted
And my soul shattered at their parting.
And my soul cracked at their leaving
وَوَجَدتُand I felt وَجداًanguish كانَwas أَهوَنُهُits mildest
وَوَجَدتُ وَجداً كانَ أَهوَنُهُ
كَأَشَدِّlike the fiercest وَجدِanguish الجِنِّthe jinn وَالإِنسِand humankind
كَأَشَدِّ وَجدِ الجِنِّ وَالإِنسِ
And I felt anguish whose mildest pang
I was seized by a grief, the least of which

وَتَشَتُّتَand the scattering الأَهواءِof desires يَخلِجُنيtugs at me
وَتَشَتُّتَ الأَهواءِ يَخلِجُني

نَحوَ العِراقِ وَمَطلَعِ الشَمسِ
And scattered desires tug at me
Yearnings disquiet me northwards
Toward Iraq and the sun's rising-place.
Toward Iraq and the rising sun
وَهُناكَand there فَأتونيthen they came to me بِخَرعَبَةٍwith a tall, supple woman
وَهُناكَ فَأتوني بِخَرعَبَةٍ

And there they brought me a tall, supple woman,
And there they brought me a lively
Radiant, companionable, one of the dark-lipped women.
Young she-camel, spirited and smooth

Whatever sickness there was fell to us,
Whatever malady there was, was in us
While hers were well-being and soundness of soul.
While she was health and peace to the soul

Despaired of me, and I wake as I slept
