إِنَّindeed الحَبيبَthe beloved أَلَمَّpaid a visit بِالرَكبِto the caravan
لَيلاًat night فَباتَthen spent the night مُجانِباًkeeping apart from صَحبيmy companions
Indeed, the beloved visited the caravan
The beloved pained me at nightfall
by night, then spent the night apart from my companions.
And passed the night estranged from me
فَفَزِعتُthen I woke with a start مِنfrom نَومِsleep عَلىin a state of وَسَنٍdrowsiness
وَذَكَرتُand I remembered ماwhat قَدhad هاجَstirred مِنof نُصبيmy anguish
Then I woke with a start from sleep, still drowsy,
I awoke in fright from a dream-filled sleep
and remembered the anguish that had arisen in me.
And recalled the adversity that plagued me
زارَتshe visited رُمَيلَةُRumayla زائِراًa visitor فيin صُحبَةٍcompany
أَحبِبhow dear! بِهاshe is زَوراًas a visitor عَلىdespite عَتبِreproach
Rumayla visited a guest among companions.
Rumaylah came visiting in the company of friends
How dear she was as a visitor, despite reproach—
With whom I feigned affection at her threshold
زَوراًa visitor لَعَمريby my life شَفَّwore thin قَلبيmy heart ذِكرُهُremembrance of her
سَكَنَdwelt الغَديرَal-Ghadir فَلَيسَso is not مِنof شَعبيmy valley
a visitor, by my life, whose remembrance wore my heart thin,
Feigned, by my life - the memory soothed my heart
who dwelt at al-Ghadir, and so was not of my valley.
The pool grew still, no longer a raging sea
وَأَناand I اِمرُؤٌa man بِقَرارِin the lowlands of مَكَّةَMecca مَسكِنيmy dwelling
وَلَهاand to her هَوايَmy love فَقَدfor indeed سَبَتshe captured قَلبيmy heart
And I am a man whose home lies in Mecca's lowlands,
I who dwell in Mecca, my abode,
and my love is hers, for she has taken my heart captive.
Am enamored of her, she captivated my heart
وَلَقَدand indeed حَفِظتُI kept in mind وَماand not نَسيتُI forgot مَقالَهاher words
عِندَat الرَحيلِdeparture هَجَرَتناyou forsook us حِبّيmy beloved
And I have indeed kept her words in mind and not forgotten them,
I remember still and have not forgotten her words
at departure: "You have forsaken us, my beloved."
When we parted, she deserted me, my love
وَبَدَتand she appeared لَناto us عِندَat الفِراقِparting بِكُربَةٍin anguish
وَلَناand for us بِذَلِكَbecause of that أَفضَلُthe greater الكَربِanguish
And she appeared to us at parting in anguish,
At our separation, grief showed itself to us
and ours, because of that, was the greater anguish.
Yet in that is my finest agony
قالَتshe said رُمَيلَةُRumayla حينَwhen جِئتُI came مُوَدِّعاًbidding farewell
ظُلماًunjustly بِلاwithout تِرَةٍa grievance وَلاand no ذَنبِfault
Rumayla said when I came to bid farewell,
Rumaylah said when I came to bid farewell
unjustly, without grievance or fault:
Unjustly, without fault or crime
هَذاthis الَّذيthe one who وَلّىturned away فَأَجمَعَthen resolved upon رِحلَةًa journey
وَاِبتاعَand bought مِنّاfrom us البُعدَdistance بِالقُربِin exchange for closeness
"This is the one who turned away and resolved to depart,
"This one who turned away and journeyed off
and bought distance from us at the price of closeness."
And bought from us distance in place of nearness"
فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered her وَالدَمعُand the tears مِنّيfrom me مُسبِلٌstreaming
سَكبٌpouring forth وَدَمعيand my tears دائِمُunceasing السَكبِthe flow
So I answered her, with tears streaming from me,
I answered her, with copious tears flowing from me
pouring forth—and my tears were unceasing in their flow:
Pouring down while my weeping poured forth
إِنif قَدindeed سَلَوتُI ceased longing عَنِfor النِساءِwomen سِواكُمُother than you
وَهَجَرتُهُنَّand I forsook them فَحُبُّكُمthen your love طِبّيmy remedy
"If indeed I have ceased to long for women other than you,
"I have asked about women other than you
and forsaken them, then your love is my remedy."
And shunned them - for your love is my delight"
