لَقَدindeed عَرَضَتappeared ليto me بِالمُحَصَّبِat al-Muhassab مِنof مِنىًMina
مَعَduring الحَجِّthe pilgrimage شَمسٌa sun سُتِّرَتwas veiled بِيَمانِin Yemeni cloth
Indeed, at al-Muhassab in Mina there appeared to me
during the pilgrimage, a sun veiled in Yemeni cloth.
بَداappeared لِيَto me مِنهاfrom her مِعصَمٌa wrist يَومَthe day جَمَّرَتshe performed the ritual stoning
وَكَفٌّand a hand خَضيبٌhenna-dyed زُيِّنَتwas adorned بِبَنانِwith fingers
Her wrist appeared to me the day she cast the ritual pebbles,
and a henna-dyed hand, adorned with fingers.
فَلَمّاso when اِلتَقَيناwe met بِالثَنِيَّةِat al-Thaniyyah Pass سَلَّمَتshe greeted
وَنازَعَنيand struggled with me البَغلُthe mule اللَعينُaccursed عِنانيmy reins
So when we met at al-Thaniyyah Pass, she greeted me,
and the accursed mule wrestled with me for my reins.
فَوَاللَهِso, by God ماnot أَدريI know وَإِنّيand indeed I لَحاسِبٌsurely keeping count
بِسَبعٍwith seven رَمَيتُI pelted الجَمرَthe ritual-stoning sites أَمor بِثَمانِwith eight
So, by God, I do not know—though I was keeping count—
whether I stoned the jamrahs with seven pebbles or eight.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her عوجيturn aside فَقَدfor indeed كانَwas مَنزِليmy dwelling
خَصيبٌbountiful لَكُمfor you ناءٍfar removed عَنِfrom الحَدَثانِfate's misfortunes
So I said to her, 'Turn aside, for my dwelling was
bountiful for you, far from the blows of fate.'
فَعُجناso we turned aside فَعاجَتthen she lingered ساعَةًa while وَتَكَلَّمَتand she spoke
فَظَلَّتand kept لَهاof hers العَينانِthe two eyes تَبتَدِرانِvying to shed tears
So we turned aside; she lingered a while and spoke,
and her two eyes kept vying to shed tears.
