أَرِقتُI lay awake فَلَمso did not أَنَمI sleep طَرَباfrom longing
وَبِتُّand I spent the night مُسَهَّداًkept awake نَصِباweary
I lay awake, unable to sleep for longing,
and spent the night sleepless and weary,
لَطَيفِfor the phantom of أَحَبِّthe dearest خَلقِcreatures of اللَGod (name begins here)
هِcompletion of God's name إِنساناًa human being وَإِنand even if غَضِباhe grew angry
for the phantom of the dearest of God's creatures—
a human being, even when angry—
إِلىto نَفسيmy soul وَأَوجَهِهِمand the fairest-faced of them
وَإِنand even though أَمسىhe has become قَدِalready اِحتَجَباhe has hidden himself

to my soul, and the fairest-faced of them,
though he has now withdrawn from sight,
وَصَرَّمَand he severed حَبلَناour cord ظُلماًunjustly

لِبَلغَةِbecause of a report from كاشِحٍa spiteful foe كَذَباhe lied
and unjustly severed the cord between us,
because of a report from a spiteful foe who lied.
فَلَمso did not أَردُدI dispute مَقالَتَهاher words
وَلَمand not أَكُI was عاتِباًreproachful عَتِباresentful
I did not dispute her words,
nor was I reproachful or resentful;

فَأَمسىand so became الحَبلُthe cord مُنقَضِباsevered
but she severed my cord,
and so the cord was left severed.
