He donned the darkness, coming to you in secret,

bashful, to fulfill a lovesick lover's need.

She signaled to us with her fingertips:

We are wary of the riders' eyes.

Go back, and keep diverting our follower's gaze,

until love's faded traces are renewed.

    Then, behold, figures I knew,

in musk, ornaments, and striped robes,

walking through the thicket at their ease,

their youthful freshness showing through sleeveless tunics.

Umamah said on the day of her visit,

with the words of one speaking obliquely, without reproach:

    ما كانَ عَن رَأيٍ وَلا لُبِّ

    This is the man whom separation has dogged;

it came of neither judgment nor sense.

The friend sold out for an absent woman's love,

in al-Sham, in a forbidding place, hard to reach.

Do not destroy me with your torment,

for God knows what lies hidden in the heart.
