إِرحَميناhave pity on us ياO نُعمُNuʿm مِمّاfrom what لَقيناwe suffered
وَصِليناand grant us union فَأَنعُميso be gracious أَوor دَعيناleave us
Have pity on us, O Nuʿm, for what we have suffered.
And grant us your love; be gracious—or leave us
عَنكِaway from you إِنif تَسأَليyou ask فِدىًa ransom لَكِfor you نَفسيmy soul
ثُمَّthen تَأتينَyou do غَيرَother than ماwhat تَزعُميناyou claim
Alone. If you ask—may my soul be your ransom—
Then you act otherwise than you claim.
إِنَّindeed خَيرَthe best of النِساءِwomen عِنديto me وِصالاًin granting union
مَنshe who تُؤاتيfulfils بِوَصلِهاthrough her union ماwhat هَويناwe desired
Indeed, the best of women, to me, in granting union
Is she whose union fulfils what we desire.
وَاِذكُريand remember العَهدَthe pledge وَالمَواثيقَand solemn vows مِنّاof ours
يَومَthe day آلَيتِyou swore لاnot تُطيعينَyou heed فيناconcerning us
And remember our pledge and solemn vows,
The day you swore not to heed, concerning us,
قَولَthe words of واشٍa slanderer أَتاكِcame to you عَنّاabout us بِصَرمٍwith estrangement
أَوor نَصيحٍan adviser يُريدُwishes أَنto تَقطَعيناyou cut us off
The words of a slanderer who brought you talk of our estrangement,
Or an adviser who wishes you to cut us off.
وَيَمينيand my oath بِمَثلِto the same effect as ذَلِكَthat أَنّيthat I
لاnot أُصافيI give sincere affection to سِواكِanyone but you فيin العالَميناthe worlds
And my oath to the same effect: that I
Would give my love to none but you in all the worlds.
ثُمَّthen غَيَّرتِyou changed ماwhat فَعَلتِyou did بِفَعلٍby an act
كانَwas فيهِin it خِلافُthe opposite of ماwhat تَعِديناyou promise us
Then you changed what you had done by an act
That ran counter to what you promised us.
فَلَئِنso if indeed كُنتِyou were قَدalready تَغَيَّرتِyou changed بَعديafter me
وَرَضيتِand you consented الغَداةَthis morning أَنto تَصرِميناyou sever ties with us
So if you have indeed changed in my absence,
And have consented this morning to sever ties with us,
وَنَسَيتِand you forgot الَّذيwhat عَهِدتِyou pledged إِلَيناto us
فيin أُمورٍmatters خَلَونَthat passed أَنthat تَعلَميناyou know us
And have forgotten what you pledged to us
In matters now past—that you would know us—
لاnot تَزالينَyou cease to be آثَرَthe most cherished of الناسِpeople عِنديto me
فَاِعلَميso know ذاكَthat فيin الهَوىlove ماas long as حَيِيّناwe live
You remain the dearest of all people to me;
So know this in love, for as long as we live.
