إِذهَب وَقُل لِلَّتي لامَت وَقَد عَلِمَت

إِذهَب وَقُل لِلَّتي لامَت وَقَد عَلِمَت

أَن لَم تَنَل في ثَوابي طائِلاً تَدَعِ

أَن لَم تَنَل في ثَوابي طائِلاً تَدَعِ

Go and tell her who reproached me and already knew

Go and say to her who blamed me, though she knew

That she gained nothing from my requital—to leave off

That she gained nothing by blaming me, to cease

بَعضَ المَلامَةِ في أَن لا أُصاحِبَها

بَعضَ المَلامَةِ في أَن لا أُصاحِبَها

كَيما تُدارِكَ أَمراً غَيرَ مُرتَجَعِ

كَيما تُدارِكَ أَمراً غَيرَ مُرتَجَعِ

Some of her reproach for my not keeping her company,

Some of the blame, so she might make good again

So that she may remedy a matter beyond recall.

A matter not to be retrieved. Do not

لا تَرحَليني بِذَنبٍ أَنتِ صاحِبُهُ

لا تَرحَليني بِذَنبٍ أَنتِ صاحِبُهُ

وَصادِقيني صَفاءَ الوُدِّ وَاِستَمِعي

وَصادِقيني صَفاءَ الوُدِّ وَاِستَمِعي

Do not saddle me with a fault that is yours;

Hold me to fault for what is your own deed

And be true to me with pure affection, and listen.

And give me sincerity and friendship. Hear

لا تَسمَعِنَّ بِنا قَولَ الوُشاةِ وَمَن

لا تَسمَعِنَّ بِنا قَولَ الوُشاةِ وَمَن

يُطِع مَقالَةَ واشٍ كاشِحٍ يَضَعِ

يُطِع مَقالَةَ واشٍ كاشِحٍ يَضَعِ

Do not heed the slanderers’ words about us; and whoever

No evil of us said by slanderers. Whoso

Obeys a spiteful slanderer’s words will sink low.

Believes the babble of a hateful gossip errs.

لَيسَ الخَديعَةُ مِن سِرّي وَلا خُلُقي

لَيسَ الخَديعَةُ مِن سِرّي وَلا خُلُقي

وَإِن يُشارَ بِأَدنى الأَمرِ يَمتَنِعِ

وَإِن يُشارَ بِأَدنى الأَمرِ يَمتَنِعِ

Deceit is not part of my inner nature or my character;

Guile is not in my nature or my ways

And if the slightest such thing is suggested, it proves impossible.

Though the slightest hint of it would give offense.
