Do you recognize today the traces of the dwelling and the ruins,

as you recognized the decorative bands on the sword-polisher's scabbard?

A dwelling of Marwa's, when my people and theirs

were at al-Kanisiyya, indulging in amusement and love-talk.

Your tender youth has now departed from us,

and grey hair appeared upon the head, settled, then blazed.

Indeed, the youth we were once known for

has gone, and we have not satisfied our desire for its pleasures.

Youth departed, praiseworthy and beyond recall,

and my head took the worst of substitutes:

grey hair that spread—its white patches made me weep.

Now my hair's blackness has changed and departed.

If only youth's riding camels had halted among us,

and grey hair were leaving us today!

Youth has perished, and death now succeeds it.

No welcome to grey hair's arrival when it comes to stay!

What ails my wife? Her demands on me have lasted so long.

She now invents faults and pretexts against me.
