Did you not linger at the ruins that stirred doubt,

    effaced between al-Muḥaṣṣab and al-Ṭalūb,

in Mecca, worn away, over which swept,

after the tribe departed, the train of a ceaseless east wind?

So it lay deserted, save for piled stones and a surrounding trench.

It rekindled longing in the impassioned heart.

As though the dwelling were clothed in richly patterned fabric,

of Janadī weaving or the cloth of al-Jarūb.

As though the track of an effacing wind upon it,

with time's vicissitudes, were a line inscribed on a palm stalk.

    Nuʿm's dwelling—when love-madness revisited him,

a sickness within him that baffled the healing charmer.

By your life, in claiming what Nuʿm owes me,

I am surely like one calling to someone who will not answer.

And Nuʿm, though I have fallen in love with Nuʿm,

neither repays kindness nor rewards it.

Nor does Nuʿm repay a loan of affection,

nor promise favor any time soon.

When Nuʿm withdraws, she is distant, and there intervene

hindrances to visiting her, along with the watcher.

And if her dwelling carries her far away, he is bewildered

by his plight—the plight of a stranger.

I call her by the name Nuʿm to keep her concealed,

yet the heart discloses a beloved figure.

And I conceal what I call her, yet there appear

its telltale signs to a shrewd, discerning mind.

So if you turn away from us and are swayed

by the words of a double-dealing, fawning liar,

how many an adviser concerning Nuʿm's family

have I defied, and many a kindly kinsman!

Why not ask the clans of Saʿd?

For experience becomes plain to the discerning.

We took the lead in noble deeds and overran

the villages between Maʾrib and al-Durūb,

with every long-limbed, swimming-gaited mare under rein,

    and every high-gazing, swift-running thoroughbred.

And we are the horsemen of battle whenever

the people's leader resolves to flee.

We stand firm against calamities, so you will never see us

driven off, fearing the outcome of calamities.

And our band in war is guarded by proud men,

    fearless warriors, kindlers of wars.

And our neighbor is safe among us, and there are found

our bounties in a well-guarded, fertile haven.

And we know that one day we shall perish,

as many among the peoples have already perished.

So we shun disgraceful deeds wherever they are,

and earn eminence alongside those who strive for it.

And were al-Baṭḥāʾ asked about us, it would say:

"They are people of bounty and lavish gifts."

And Mecca's valley shines when we spend the morning

there, as does the resting-place of camels fallen on their sides.

And many a disheveled man, if you call, responds late at night,

despite prolonged drowsiness and unceasing toil.

And his pillow was the curved frame of a camel saddle,

upon the back of a nimble, fleet she-camel.

I spend the blackness of night with him, driving at full speed,

when sleep is preferred to waking.
