وَلَقَد قُلتُ إِذ تَطاوَلَ هَجري

وَلَقَد قُلتُ إِذ تَطاوَلَ هَجري

رَبِّ لا صَبرَ لي عَلى هَجرِ هِندِ

رَبِّ لا صَبرَ لي عَلى هَجرِ هِندِ

And indeed I said, when my estrangement dragged on:

And I have said, when her estrangement was prolonged:

My Lord, I cannot bear Hind's forsaking me.

O Lord, I have no patience for the estrangement of Hind!

رَبِّ قَد شَفَّني وَأَوهَنَ عَظمي

رَبِّ قَد شَفَّني وَأَوهَنَ عَظمي

وَبَراني وَزادَني فَوقَ جَهدي

وَبَراني وَزادَني فَوقَ جَهدي

My Lord, it has wasted me away and weakened my bones,

O Lord, she has cured me and weakened my bones,

And worn me down and burdened me beyond my endurance.

And tried me, and increased me beyond my strength.

رَبِّ حَمَّلتَني مِنَ الحُبِّ ثِقلاً

رَبِّ حَمَّلتَني مِنَ الحُبِّ ثِقلاً

رَبِّ لا صَبرَ لي وَلا عَزمَ عِندي

رَبِّ لا صَبرَ لي وَلا عَزمَ عِندي

My Lord, You have laden me with a burden of love.

O Lord, You have burdened me with love’s heaviness,

My Lord, I have no patience and no resolve.

O Lord, I have no patience, nor firmness in me.

رَبِّ عُلِّقتُها تُجَدِّدُ هَجري

رَبِّ عُلِّقتُها تُجَدِّدُ هَجري

ذاكَ وَاللَهِ مِن شَقاوَةِ جَدّي

ذاكَ وَاللَهِ مِن شَقاوَةِ جَدّي

My Lord, I was made to love her; she forsakes me anew.

I cling to her, she renews my estrangement,

That, by God, comes of my ill fortune.

That, by God, is from my wretched luck.

لَيسَ حُبّي لَها بِبِدعَةِ أَمرٍ

لَيسَ حُبّي لَها بِبِدعَةِ أَمرٍ

قَد أَحَبَّ الرِجالُ قَبلي وَبَعدي

قَد أَحَبَّ الرِجالُ قَبلي وَبَعدي

My love for her is not an unheard-of thing;

My love for her is no novel affair,

Men have loved before me and after me.

Men before and after me have loved.

جَعَلَ اللَهُ مَن أُحِبُّ سِواكُم

جَعَلَ اللَهُ مَن أُحِبُّ سِواكُم

مِن جَميعِ الأَنامِ نَفسَكِ يَفدي

مِن جَميعِ الأَنامِ نَفسَكِ يَفدي

May God cause anyone I love other than you

May God make whoever I love but you,

Among all humankind to ransom your life.

Of all people, a ransom for your life.
